4 things you should know about Port Talbot (number 3 is a shocker!)

1. Port Talbot Steelworks – one of the largest in the world

Building started on the Port Talbot steelworks in 1901. Today, the plant looms large over the town and is capable of producing nearly 5 million tonnes of steel slab a year. The plant consumes an astonishing amount of electricity. According to the National Assembly for Wales, the steelworks uses as much electricity as the whole of Swansea, a town with a population of over 240,000 people.

At its peak in the 1960s, the steelworks employed nearly 20,000 people. Several factors, including overproduction and the rise of the Chinese steel market, has seen employee numbers dwindle to under 5,000. This is still over 10% of Port Talbot’s total population.

5,000 is also the number of installations we at Falcon have under our belt. We’ve helped customers in Port Talbot and throughout South Wales with their home improvement needs.

2. The most famous garage in Port Talbot

In 2018, a few weeks before Christmas, the Welsh town made headlines around the globe when world-famous graffiti artist Banksy painted a mural on a garage wall. On one wall, the piece portrays a little boy playing in what appears to be snow, on another wall, it shows that a burning wheelie bin is the source of the “snow”.

The artwork is suspected to point to the frustration that many locals have about the dust and air pollution the Port Talbot steelworks produces. Within a month of the artwork appearing, an estimated 20,000 people had travelled to Port Talbot to see the artwork for themselves. The piece was bought by an Essex-based gallery owner for a “six-figure sum”.

3. The foiled bank robbery

In the summer of 1958, an audacious plan was hatched to rob the Midland Bank in Port Talbot. John Rivers, the plan’s mastermind, recruited a pair of brothers to help him carry out his plan. They rented a shop opposite the bank and planned on tunnelling under the road. They would then into break into the vault over the weekend when the bank was closed. What could possibly go wrong?

A few days after the lease on the vacant shop was signed, the landlord had still not received payment from the trio. He went to the shop looking for the men, only to find piles of earth and rubble in the shop. After they were alerted about the discovery, the police arrested the brothers for the attempted robbery. Rivers disappeared into thin air and was never caught for involvement in the crime.

Don’t get caught out in the cold this winter. Faulty old windows or a dated conservatory could be costing you money on your energy bills. Why not treat your home to an upgrade with beautiful uPVC tilt and turn windows or a spacious new uPVC conservatory.

4. From Port Talbot to Hollywood

A number of A-list actors have been born or raised in the Welsh town.

Anthony Hopkins, who won an Oscar in 1991 for his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs, was born in Port Talbot in 1937.

BAFTA winner Michael Sheen, known for roles including Brain Clough in Damned United and David Frost in Frost/Nixon, grew up in the town and, when asked by BBC Wales, said he’d prefer Port Talbot over Los Angeles.

A truly iconic name on stage and the big screen, Richard Burton was born a few miles outside of Port Talbot. Burton was renowned for his baritone voice, outstanding Shakespearean acting, and turbulent relationship with Elizabeth Taylor.
