Between January and June 2019, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that there was a 4% fall in burglary in England and Wales compared to the same period the previous year. While this is an encouraging statistic, this is a figure that has fluctuated over many years. The question you have to ask is “is my home secure?”
According to the organisers of the National Home Security Month, a surprising 28% of UK adults don’t take any security precautions at home. Insert the old cliché “it’s better to be safe than sorry” here. There are some simple precautions you can take to ensure you keep the bad guys out of your home. In this article, we’ll give you some top tips to burglar proof your windows.
Install security cameras
Security cameras act as a deterrent and can record the movements and actions of any trespassers. Cameras can be fitted to the home’s exterior facing the window. Alternatively, they can sit on the inside of the window recording movement outside of the home. The presence of a camera is normally enough to put a criminal off.
Make sure that the camera is fitted to an area that is visible to any would-be intruders. This may put them off trying to break into the home before they’ve tried. While a dummy security camera might seem like a good investment, these are often easy to recognise and still leave your home susceptible to intrusion.
Protect with light
Most of the intruders who try their luck at night don’t love a spotlight on them when they’re trying to do their worst. This measure is a complementary element to the security cameras, installing motion detected spotlights and facing them towards your windows is another effective method of securing your home. Some models of motion sensor lights can be linked to a central alarm for more comprehensive protection.
Double check your windows are shut
As simple as this may sound, it’s a necessary measure to reiterate. Recent figures found that almost 30% of burglars gain access into a home through an unlocked window or door. At the height of the heatwave in the summer of 2019, the Police stressed that leaving windows open could leave residents vulnerable to burglary. A valid suggestion with as many as 47% of burglaries being “spur of the moment” decisions.
Enlist some green protection
Planting thorny shrubs or bushes under your windows can give your home an additional layer of protection. Even the most determined intruder wouldn’t be keen on the idea of wading through your spikey safeguard. Be sure not to block the view of your home from the street or from neighbours. Keeping an open view allows for natural surveillance, which is an important way to put intruders off.
Upgrade to new secure and stylish windows
The Secured by Design (SBD) initiative was set up by the Police service in 1989 to curb a significant rise in burglary. One of the reasons it was created was to raise the standards of security in windows and doors throughout the country. On their website, they state “burglars found externally glazed windows relatively easy to enter, as all they had to do in many cases was lift out the double-glazing and climb through the frame.”
Since their launch over 30 years ago, they have met their goal with the crime rate dropping as much as 87% in new developments. We at Falcon are proud that our windows are designed to meet Secured by Design requirements. They feature a unique combination of a robust central deadlock, bi-directional bolts and roller cams to offer high levels of security. Old windows won’t just lack vital security aspects, but they could be costing you money on your energy bills too.
