How does Double Glazing work?

What is double glazing?

Double-glazing is a window which consists of two panes of glass that are fitted between a frame. The frames tend to be constructed from either uPVC, aluminium or timber, which are common construction materials for windows. The two panes of glass are separated by a small gap, which is filled either with air or an inert gas, such as argon.

How does double glazing work?

The gap between the two panes of glass plays a big part in helping the window to achieve strong levels of thermal insulation. As air is a bad conductor of heat, less heat is able to escape through the window. Conversely, glass itself is a strong conductor of heat, meaning heat can easily escape through windows which have single glazing. In order to amplify the insulating effect, an inert gas like argon is trapped between the two panes of glass. Argon has around 65% of the thermal conductivity of air, meaning it’s a significantly better insulator than air.

Sound insulation

Double glazing also offers significant improvements to the amount of sound it blocks out of homes, compared to single glazing. This is because sound likes to travel through materials which are elasticised, hence why glass, which is quite rigid, is good for blocking it out. However, single glazed windows tend to use a thin sheet of glass, limiting the sound quelling capabilities. As a result of the extra sheet on double glazing, the amount of sound which is blocked out increases significantly.

Security

Double glazed windows are also more secure than single glazed ones. Put simply, this is because two panes of glass are more difficult to smash than one.

Double glazing from Falcon Installations

In order for windows to comply with current building regulations, they must achieve an energy rating of C. However, double glazed windows from Falcon are able to achieve a Window Energy Rating (WER) of A. This ensures they’ll retain plenty of warmth in your home, whilst they may also reduce your energy bills significantly.

Are you a homeowner who’s looking to replace your single glazed windows? Or perhaps you’ve already got double glazing but it isn’t performing as you’d like?
