If you’ve ever lived in a house with children, animals or the accident-prone, it’s likely that you’ll have experienced a broken window at some point. Unfortunately, accidents do happen in life and broken windows are unavoidable at times. Once the initial panic of find your window damaged has subsided, what do you? Here at Falcon, we’ve come up with a 5 step guide to what you should do if you find yourself dealing with a broken window.

1. Contact a home improvement company

The first thing you should do when you discover a broken window in your property, is call a reliable home improvement company to arrange repair or replacement. Window systems are complicated structures. Attempting to fix it yourself could be an expensive affair if you get things wrong. A good home improvement company will be able to repair your window at a good rate. For instance, here at Falcon, we offer an incredibly competitive price for our window repairs.

2. Consider the damage

After having contacted a home improvement company, consider the damage. Pay close attention to the location of broken glass and the nature of the damage that has been done to your window. If the home improvement company is unable to attend your home straightaway consider what steps you could take to temporarily secure your window: is it feasible to quickly board up the window, or is the damage too great etc.?

3. Clean up the glass

Once you have a good idea of the extent of the damage, begin the clean up process. Wearing thick, garden gloves carefully remove any broken glass from around the window. Place this into a double-bagged bin bag. Once all the visible pieces of glass have been removed get a vacuum cleaner and hoover over the affected area: some slithers of glass may still be there.

4. Secure the window

When all traces of broken glass have been removed, take steps to temporarily secure your window if your home improvement company can’t attend for a while. Get a thin, wide piece of plywood or very thick piece of cardboard and place this over the broken window. Ensure that it’s secured in place: this will help to keep out the worst of the elements until your home improvement company arrives to repair the window.

5. Contact any insurance companies

With the broken glass disposed of and the window safely secured, now’s the time to contact your home insurance provider if you think that the damage done to your window is something that you could claim on.
