Things to do in South Wales if you’re bored this Winter

Live in South Wales? Bored? Here’s a list of things to do this Winter, ranging from visiting a chocolate factory to exploring the Christmas markets.

Tick off some of those Christmas presents in Cardiff

That particular department store released their advert last week – it can only mean one thing. Christmas is just around the corner. Even if you’ve got a really, really, really long list of people to buy for, luckily the shops in South Wales offer something for everyone.

Whether you’re after high street, department stores, arcades or markets, Cardiff is one location that has it all. Even the Christmas markets are open til 7pm on Thursdays in December. This is perfect if you’re short on time and need to get some quirky little gifts after work.

It’s hibernation time – stock up on chocolate from the Chocolate Factory in Kingsway, Swansea

Always fancied seeing behind the scenes at a chocolate factory? Secretly want to be Willy Wonka? Treat yourself this Winter by visiting the Chocolate Factory in Swansea. Learn all of the secrets behind this family-run chocolatier. As well as selling a huge range of delicious chocolate products, they offer visitors guided tours of the factory which can be booked in advance.

This is perfect for a little pick-me-up or if you’re after stocking fillers for your loved ones this Christmas. Think marshmallow snowmen, chocolate Christmas puddings and sugar mice – and all in South Wales! Need we say more?

Take the kids (or grandkids) to a free film screening

Thanks to the Into Film Festival, children and young people aged from 5-19 can enjoy a free film screening up until the end of November. Choices include the Princess and the Frog, Wall-E and Avengers.

Even when this initiative finishes, why not visit the cinema anyway. If you want to take the family, great releases this Winter include Star Wars and the new Pan film. Or if you want a more mature film, see the much anticipated biopic of Steve Jobs’ life or perhaps the uplifting Lady in the Van. New releases are always coming to cinemas in South Wales – just watch out for news from your local cinema.

Beat those mince pies to it and go for a stroll!

Just because it cold doesn’t mean walks have to be rushed or scrapped completely. Wrap up warm, take a flask of coffee and you’re all good to go. Even if you don’t want to go too far, at locations such as Aber Falls in Abergwyngregyn, you can still see some beautiful wintery scenery with just a few miles of strolling.

The waterfall is at its best after a heavy downpour or when the sets in, so that’s the weather excuses gone! Just think. The more you walk, the fitter you get and so the quicker you get to the biscuit tin!

Take advantage of the free public lectures and courses at the University of South Wales

Even if its freezing outside, The University offers lots of interesting talks from the comfort of their lecture rooms. Events include family therapy workshops, discussions about Welsh heritage and poetry readings. Their calendar is constantly updated so keep an eye out on their website. The bonus? Most lectures are free!

Release your inner child (or just take the children) mountain biking in Merthyr Tydfil

The fantastic Bike Park Wales, in the middle of the South Wales valleys, boasts mountain biking trails for all ages and abilities. Even if its raining or cold, soon have fun and get warmed up by trying your hand (or handles) at one of their forest routes. If you want to relax post-ride, or have a sly coffee whilst other members of your family ride away, luckily there’s a café that offers hot and cold food, 7 days a week.

Walk the same grass as one of South Wales’ greatest families

Visit the gardens of Tredegar House, part of a 90-acre park near Newport. For more than 500 years the architectural wonder of the British Isles was home to the Morgans, later Lords Tredegar. They owned over 40,000 across South Wales by the end of the 18th century and had significant social, economic and political influence in south-east wales especially.

The house is closed for Winter, but it’s still worthwhile enjoying the scenery (and tea shop!) The park is open from dawn until dusk every day, meaning there is plenty of time to explore! The café and gift shop are open Wednesday until Sunday every week, giving you the perfect excuse to have a cappuccino or browse around some quirky gifts from in and around South Wales.
