How to stop condensation on your windows

With colder, winter months approaching us, we turn up the heating, wrap up in our blankets and curl up at home. However, the cold weather normally comes with condensation, which is something we’d rather not have to worry about appearing on our double glazing every year. It’s a very common problem for most households in winter and we want to help you with some tips and information on how to stop condensation on your windows.

What is condensation?

what is condensation

We love to keep extra warm and snug in the winter by turning up the heating and shutting all of the windows to trap it in your home. Your windows are more susceptible to condensation during these colder months as the air outside is cool, whilst the air inside your house is warm. Keeping the windows shut for too long means that there is a lack of ventilation throughout your home, causing a build-up in moisture as water vapour, which condenses to water as it hits the cold surface on your windows.

Everyday activities are the main cause of condensation, we are constantly adding water vapour into the air when we cook, dry our clothes on the radiators or shower – even breathing creates half a pint of water! Condensation builds up on your windows and can become an eyesore, blocking the view out of your windows. It can also create damp spots and mould on your windowsill, which damages your home and we want to stop this from happening every year during these colder months. Knowing the tricks and tips on how to stop condensation on your windows is going to help you in the long run.

External and internal condensation on windows

As much as condensation is a pain, if you spot it on the outside of our window, it shows that they are working and performing how they should be. They keep the warm air in and the cold air out of your home. If you notice condensation on the inside of your windows though, that isn’t so good. This means that the external pane of glass isn’t protecting the internal pane from the cold, so any moisture that the air is precipitating on the inside pane and causing condensation. Sometimes this can drip down your window and form a puddle on your window cills which creates a whole other problem. If this is the case, it may be time to invest in new windows.
