What is condensation?
Condensation is the process by which water vapour turns to liquid.
Warm air in a home holds lots of water vapour. When this air hits a surface colder than itself, such as a window pane, the vapour condenses and turns back into water. This is seen as small water droplets on the windowpane.
Condensation: the causes
Modern aids to comfort around the home have created rooms that are warmer but that often have less ventilation than those in the past. This means that water vapour naturally created by people living in a home can’t escape as easily and so condenses on surfaces such as window panes and ledges.
The difference in temperature between the internal and external environment, and the glass itself, is what causes condensation to form around the home.
Why it’s bad
Condensation is bad for a variety of reasons. Not only can it cause damage to paintwork, curtains, wall coverings and window fittings, it can also lead to the growth of mould, which can present a real health risk.
The solutions
Condensation can be reduced by taking a variety of simple measures. Providing natural ventilation through opening windows or installing a vent can go a long way to reducing condensation.
