Double glazing is now almost an essential part of any modern home. High quality, professionally installed double glazing brings a wealth of benefits to any property. When done properly, new double glazed windows will improve your home’s energy efficiency capacity, boost security levels, and enhance the aesthetic appearance.
Unfortunately, as with all aspects of the home, your double glazing can experience faults and problems. One of the most common causes for concern regarding double glazed windows is the window panes becoming misted. To find a solution to this problem, first let’s look at how double glazing units work.
What causes misted windows?
Double glazing is manufactured as a sealed unit. Two panes of glass are sealed together onto an exterior frame and the space in between the panes is filled with an inert gas such as argon to improve insulation. The space between the window panes helps to keep heat inside the home and prevent cold air from entering.
A double glazed unit can become misted between the two panes when the exterior seal fails. Once the seal stops providing the required protection, condensation will be able to form on the inside of the two glass panes. Seal failure can be caused by deterioration over time, poor installation, or prolonged use of chemicals for exterior window cleaning. Whatever the reason for a window seal failure, you’ll want the problem rectified before further problems occur.
Repair or replace?

If your double glazed windows are still relatively new and you have a five or ten year warranty, the installer should rectify the problem. If the seals have failed prematurely, they can be removed and the units resealed. If, however, you have argon filled units, this method will not be possible.
If your windows are over ten years old, then it will probably be best to replace them. Continued attempts to repair can be costly with only temporary improvements in window performance. Unfortunately, when your window’s seals fail, the best option is usually a window replacement.
