How much does it cost to soundproof a room?

We all want a quiet and peaceful home. A relaxing place to return to after a hard day’s work. Sometimes, however, a variety of external factors can interrupt your peace. If your home is prone to exterior traffic noise or you live near to a noisy factory or airport, your dream of a quiet and tranquil home may seem a million miles away. Don’t despair yet. All is not lost as there are many ways to soundproof your home.

How to soundproof a room

There are various ways to soundproof a room. You could try the DIY approach. Increasing the thickness of your walls is a good place to start. This can be done by attaching thick blankets or curtains to the wall. It may not be the most aesthetically pleasing method but should help to reduce the noise entering your home.

Large bookshelves and cabinets will help to reduce noise transmission and are useful and convenient. Acoustic panelling can also be fixed to the wall to enhance soundproofing. If there’s a large gap between the bottom of your door and the floor, a rubber door sweep will help to further reduce noise penetration. These are all relatively cost-effective methods of soundproofing.

If you’d prefer to hire a contractor, they will probably offer to increase the thickness of your walls using dense dry walling. This type of material is designed to absorb sound waves, effectively soundproofing your room. Well insulated walls and ceilings are good at reducing sound transmission as well as thermal transfer. A thick deep pile carpet will also play a part in creating a quieter home.

What about the windows?

When soundproofing your home from exterior noise, it’s important to consider your window’s insulating capacity. When you’ve soundproofed your walls, but you still have a noisy home, it’s more than likely that your windows are ineffective.

Triple glazing is an excellent method of reducing noise pollution. Tests have shown that triple glazing will significantly reduce noise transmission compared to double glazing.
